At Magee 1866, we have been specialising in exquisite tailoring since the 1940’s. Our Made to Measure service combines our expert tailoring with our love of luxury fabrics.
Tailoring Then & Now
A 5th generation Irish family business, Magee 1866 was founded on handwoven tweed over 150 years ago. The company started by sending fabric bunches to tailors throughout the UK and Ireland. In the mid-1940s Howard Temple (2nd generation) saw an increasing demand for ready-to-wear with a decline in the tailoring trade and started to manufacture tailored garments.
Already known for our colourful Donegal Tweeds, moving to the finished garment was a natural progression. Our unique fabrics stood out from the industrial grey suiting that was the main product on the market. Magee 1866 thornproof suits and Donegal Tweed jackets stood the test of time and put us on the map for tailoring. The thornproof suit cost about 15 guineas, or £6 at the time.
Building on this extensive history, tailoring is still at the heart of our business. Alongside this, and in line with how we dress today, we have expanded our offering and developed casual lifestyle collections. However, a beautifully tailored suit or jacket is still an essential piece for every wardrobe.
Attention to detail – internally and externally – is key, with each component designed and made with care. Every piece plays a part. The elements you don’t see inside the garment are so important to how the jacket or trouser fits on the body and the linings, buttons, melton, piping, stitching, embroidery and of course, the main body fabric, bring the style together.
The Made to Measure collection also offers a wide selection of design options – for example single or double-breasted jacket or waistcoat, the number and style of pockets and buttons, lapel width and design, single or double vent as well as side adjusters and hem details on trousers.
Fabrics include our beautiful Donegal Tweeds – timeless Herringbones and Salt & Peppers, speckled with flecks of colour; classic pure new wool suiting in pinstripes, plains, checks and micro-designs; travel suiting with stretch and Irish Linens.
Our design philosophy has always promoted the concept of ‘slow fashion’ through timeless collections, where pieces are designed to be worn time and time again. Sustainable fabric and high-quality, long-lasting products define our DNA.

Introducing 1866 CLASSICS, a curated collection of quintessential Magee 1866 styles.
This core collection highlights our star pieces, pieces we have perfected and really can’t improve on. Each piece has been designed and made with longevity in mind.
A smart navy wool suit, crisp white cotton twill shirt, a Donegal tweed cap, a handwoven tweed jacket and long Donegal tweed coats for men; preppy hacking style tweed jackets, Donegal tweed coats and luxurious scarves and pashminas for women. Timeless design that’s impactful season after season.
As a fifth-generation family business, with over 150 years’ experience in designing, weaving and tailoring, we have refined this collection over the years. Inspired by our heritage, these staples are designed for everyday – classic shapes, premium quality, functional and uncompromising in aesthetics. These are styles that will endure for years, pieces that will always have a home in your wardrobe.
We have always been about ‘slow fashion’, it’s in our DNA. The finest of natural fibre yarns like wool and linen, which are biodegradable and renewable, are used to produce our sustainable fabrics and garments.
The collection will evolve, colours and even some new styles may be included, but at its core, this is a collection of pieces that are to be worn, treasured and in fashion next season and beyond.
Casual Luxe by Magee 1866 is a response to the needs and lifestyle changes of modern-day life. This capsule collection, influenced by weekends on the West Coast of Ireland, is made up of high-quality jersey basics and designed to be worn on their own or layered.
With a colour palette taken directly from the Magee 1866 brand, these pieces are adaptable for lots of weekend activities; from walking on the beach to long, lazy brunches with friends. Key finishing touches include fabrics woven by us in Donegal in our unique 1866 branding, making it a truly original collection.
These on-trend pieces are a seamless blend of luxury and casual, low maintenance and comfort, sophistication and simplicity. Our sustainable message is continued through the use of organic cottons and locally sourced linens. This is a collection to enjoy life’s simple pleasures and each piece is designed with longevity in mind.
One of our favourite pieces in the collection is the Navy Malin 1866 Full Zip Sweat featuring a relaxed fit and contemporary Donegal Tweed herringbone ‘1866’ applique. Mix and match with other pieces in the collection and style with casual chinos for the ultimate weekend look.
The use of houndstooth’s baby brother ‘puppytooth’ is a nod to our weaving heritage. The navy and grey micro pattern of the Puppytooth Malin Full Zip Sweat and Seahill Crew Neck Jumper, adds a twist to classic styles. Both pieces are designed to be layered over a t-shirt from the collection or a casual linen shirt for off-duty comfort without compromising on style.
The colour pink can be romantic and beautiful but also bright and vivacious. Its adaptability is just one of the reasons we love to incorporate pink into our cloths and collections.
This season we celebrate the full spectrum of the colour – from the hot and brave pinks with riotous colour bursts reminiscent of the joyful Holi Festival of Colour (and the addictive Candy Crush game), to the relaxed and delicate blush tones that evoke a tranquil vibe powerfully rooted in the authenticity and assurance of nature.
The Subtle Pink Twist
The Grace coat has returned with a luxury multicoloured twist. The exaggerated cotton, wool and silk blend sharkskin weave, features dusky pinks, aqua and sea blues and off-white chunky yarns, interwoven with contemporary gold and silver lurex for a little bit of dazzle!
The Hot Pink
Our hot pink Lily Donegal Tweed jacket provides a luxurious burst of colour to any outfit. The lightweight tweed, designed and woven at our mill by our skilled weavers, is dappled with flecks of teal and purple. The jacket’s princess seams, peak lapel and a cut-away front give it a flattering, feminine appearance without sacrificing on comfort.
Soft pastel colours of violet, ochre and aqua are contrasted against a soft pink base in a wonderfully ornate Liberty Kew garden’s floral print on our Tracy tailored fit shirt. Designed and drawn in the Liberty of London Fabrics studio in a fine line style, this print offers a dreamy and delicate interpretation of Kew Gardens’ tropical flora. Liberty of London Tana Lawn Cotton’s distinctive hand-feel and translucent softness make it a versatile favourite.
Picks for Him
A summery blend of cotton, silk and linen perfectly showcase the dusky pink check in this classic fit Liffey jacket. Designed and woven in Ireland, this opulent fabric blend is light and airy. Styled with a crisp white Irish linen shirt and chinos, this jacket is an ideal way to introduce some colour into your summer wardrobe.
If you’re still a little shy of colour, a great way to dip your toe in, is with knitwear. Styled under jackets or over shirts, a pop of pink, like our Carn Cotton ¼ Zip Jumper, elevates an outfit while keeping you comfortable and warm.
Pink in our Home and Accessory Collections
Another reason we love pink is because it reminds us of home. This time of year, the roses in Salthill’s garden (Mum’s) are in full bloom and provide endless inspiration for our accessory collection.
Pale pink checks and herringbones in the softest blends of wool, cashmere and alpaca, woven in Donegal by us bring a touch of luxury to your interiors.
Magee 1866 have been specialising in tailoring and luxury fabrics for over 150 years. We have always been renowned for our durable, hard-wearing suits – namely the original thorn-proof. This heavy, worsted woollen suit, made in the Convoy woollen mills in Donegal, simply didn’t wear out – the story goes that you could push a pencil through the cloth and then give the cloth a quick rub and one would never have known a pencil or said pencil hole had been there.
Fast forward to today and we are still producing sophisticated and beautifully tailored suits. Fabrics have developed over the years and have become much more lightweight and functional for today’s needs. The world is becoming a more casual place, but we strongly believe there will always be a place for a well-cut suit.
Here are a few of my favourite looks and outfits for the 9 – 5 week day wardrobe that work within the hectic lifestyle we all juggle today.
The Donegal tweed suit – drawing on our heritage we have adapted the original, rustic, (and a little bit rough) Donegal tweed and developed a fine, lambswool quality with the distinctive salt & pepper fleck. This season you can purchase this unique suit as a Mix & Match – i.e the jacket, trouser and waistcoat separately – this works really well if you are a. not a standard 6-inch drop (all our ‘nested suits’ are designed with a 6-inch drop – i.e. the difference between the jacket and trousers, e.g. a size 40R jacket will carry a 34R trouser) and b. you might not want the waistcoat but it does make for a lovely option on it’s own without a jacket, in case you are tempted! Here are four ways to wear your Donegal suit.
The classic pure new wool ‘business’ suit – new for this season, a luxury fine worsted wool featuring a subtle check with blue and on-trend brown. This luxurious fabric is designed and woven in England by Alfred Brown. Style with one of our luxury cotton white twill shirts and knit tie.
The Travel suit – this lightweight, stretch suit does exactly what is says on the tin – a durable, functional and yet very smart wool blend suit is a must for your work wardrobe. The fabric is designed to wear exceptionally well; travel – cars, trains and planes, it withstands long days in the office and it looks pretty good out of a suitcase. The added stretch makes this a really comfy suit. We do offer a waistcoat in this style but we also recommend the Kilgole knit waistcoat – a slightly more casual alternative to the classic suit waistcoat. This suit is available in black, navy or grey – and in two fits – classic & tailored.
Dress down options – while there will always be a place for a beautiful suit, we know there is an increasing need for a casual office look. Think comfortable chinos, (ours have 2% stretch = added comfort), a casual check shirt and cotton knitwear. If you need to dress it up a little, try one of our lightweight wool jackets – a great early fall/mid-season jacket.
The City Coat – all our coats are designed to wear over a suit jacket or standard blazer. This Autumn Winter the collection includes functional, shower-proof, lightweight Macs, cashmere blend classic wool car coats and my favourite – the Erne, a Donegal tweed raglan sleeve mid-length overcoat. (Available end September)
We have a unique collection of luxury accessories – English bridle leather belts – made in the UK, tweed and leather bags – the tweed is designed and woven by us in Donegal, Ireland. We also have a beautiful collection of ties and pocket hankies.
The Magee Made to Measure service is also worth remembering if you are looking for a suit for the office that fits you perfectly and features design details that you have chosen from our extensive collection – e.g. buttons, linings, collar meltons, piping and perhaps you initials embroidered on the inside left or under the collar.

We are renowned for our men’s sophisticated tailoring and have been perfecting the art of the ‘work wear’ wardrobe for men for over 100 years. Styling has without doubt evolved over this time, however the classic suit is still a staple.
In the 1960’s we started designing and weaving colourful, intricate tweeds which opened the door for us into the women’s market on fabric. For the last few years we have been focusing our efforts on a women’s ready-to-wear collection. This capsule wardrobe captures the 9 – 5 look perfectly for women. Fabric and garment design are at the core of what we do, as a result each piece is comfortable, smart, unique and above all made to last.
The Mona double breasted Mac is an essential piece for the Irish and British summer forecast – featuring a unique Donegal tweed trim on the under collar, this smart coat works across the 9 – 5 look to weeknights out perfectly. Style with our stretch wool cigarette pants.
We have been specialising in tailoring and luxury fabrics for over 150 years. In the 1800’s John Magee (my great-grandfather’s cousin) established his Donegal tweed business – buying and selling lengths of handwoven tweed and tailoring jackets and suits. These garments would have been made to order. In the 1930’s my grandfather set up a ready-to-wear business, but we have always maintained a personally tailored element to our business. This year we have just launched our new made to measure service. Designed around your selection of fabric, lining, trim and most importantly tailored to fit you perfectly. We take a ready-made block in a classic or tailored style and made the necessary adjustments around this to fit you. Then it’s time to sit down with a glass of champagne or coffee and get creative – choose from our extensive collection of luxury fabrics – from original Donegal tweeds to fine Italian lightweight wools. Our expert team in-store will guide you through lining, piping, collar melton, external trim options and add some personalised embroidery for the finishing touches. From the date or order to collection takes about 5 weeks.
